Appeal Letter to Individuals:
Dear
We
have all been shocked and saddened by the death and destruction inflicted upon
so many nations and peoples by the tidal waves that struck on December 26th.
The scale of loss is beyond comprehension in so many places.
Thailand
was one of the nations to suffer serious losses. A huge amount of short term aid
has come in, to the extent that storage and distribution have become issues in
themselves, but it is believed that, at least here, immediate needs are for the
most part covered.
We
at the Rotary Club of Bangkok South have received many approaches asking us how
and in what form assistance can be given. Whilst there may still be some short
term localized needs that need filling, what we are now more concerned about are
the medium and longer term needs of reconstruction and rehabilitation. To that
end we are setting up a fund to gather contributions towards that.
It
is, of course, too early now to have specific projects planned. The sorts of
things we will be looking to fund from those monies, though, are: ·
Infrastructure and
equipment for schools (including our well known water purification systems) and
other institutions in the affected provinces;
·
Education for children
orphaned in the disaster;
·
Replacement of income
generating equipment for villagers (fishermen have been particularly hard hit); and the like. These will be undertaken in consultation and
cooperation with local Rotary Clubs in the affected provinces (each has at least
one), once they get themselves re-established. Our efforts will focus on
children and the poorer sectors of society.
The
Rotary Club of Bangkok South has made an initial contribution to this fund, our
members are also providing funds for it, and there will be more to come. If you
would like to contribute to this effort, then donations can be sent to:
